Got a Happy Story is a community gathering every Friday night where we share stories large and small that have put a smile on our face. It is a time to acknowledge the joy and wonder we experience. The Happy Story diary exists as a way to anchor the community in hope and comfort while we do the hard work of taking back our country. Everyone and all sorts of stories and pictures are welcome. May we find joy and strength here.
I'm suffering from writer's block this week so I don't have much to offer in the way of a coherent thematic diary. But while it hasn't been a spectacular week for us, it hasn't been a terrible one either. I'll just share a list of things making me happy right now and ask you to share your list.
A week from today we leave for vacation. We'll be heading to Martha's Vineyard, a place I've been vacationing for 36 years. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to relax and unwind. My goal is to read a book a day and to spend time with my sister. She's flying out from California to join my parents and the soberfamily. My other two sisters will come down the following weekend.
soberboy will also finish up sailing camp next Friday. He had a blast for Pirate Day today even though he lost his eyepatch jumping off the dock. I made chocolate cupcakes, which were a big hit with both the kids and the coaches. soberboy will also have a study skills camp next week, which he thinks will be totally boring. And he's probably right. But it will also prepare him for his entry into middle school so he can suck it up for 4 days. He's had a pretty cushy summer.
I've enjoyed watching the Olympics because I caught the bug early on with rowing on the first day. Just watching the heats, especially Karsten from Belarus in the women's single sculls and the Chinese team in the quadruple sculls was amazing. It really helped me to see where my rowing stroke is deficient and gave me ideas on what to correct. All of the rowers were so inspiring. I have watched the swimming and can't wait for the diving to start. I'm really looking forward to seeing Matthew Mitcham dive. There is so much of it I don't watch because I don't care for the puff pieces on China and don't find beach volleyball even remotely interesting. But I like seeing athletes from other countries. I always end up cheering for the small countries. It was really exciting to see Boukpeti of Togo win a bronze medal in slalom kayaking. Seeing him win the first ever summer Olympic medal for his country was heartwarming.
As the last weeks of summer are upon us, I'm not really where I wanted to be but I'm okay with that. The fall will bring significant changes at work and with soberboy so I'll be glad to have the break on the Vineyard before switching gears.
What are you happy about this week?
